First United Methodist Church is a frontier congregation with frontier roots and frontier character. First UMC was the first church founded in the entire state of Wyoming, and from a September Sunday in 1867, this church aimed to be at the boundaries—the frontier—of God’s creation to preach the Good News.
To this day, First UMC proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone. We preach to the poor, the meek , the homeless, yes, and also to the banker and school teacher airwoman and policeman. We preach Good News to all. Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.
At First, we believe everyone needs to hear the Good News. That’s why we are an inclusive, welcoming church ready to greet you with a kind word or a cup of coffee before we join together in worship and praise.
But we don’t stop there. We are Methodists; so we believe the proclamation of the Good News doesn’t stop at the doors to our sanctuary but spills out into our community with acts of piety, mercy, and justice. We are a mission-oriented church, ready to lend a hand to our neighbors in need.
Come be a part of this church. Come preach Good News to Cheyenne!
Mark Marston, Senior Pastor.
Mark was born and raised in Russell Kansas and grew up attending the Trinity United Methodist Church there. After graduating from high school he joined the Air Force and was stationed both overseas and state side. After his discharge, he attended college at Sonoma State University where he met and married his wife Beth. After graduating with a B.A. in Biology, he then attended the Iliff School of Theology in Denver.
Mark served United Methodist churches in Minnesota for nine years, Colorado for ten years and Wyoming for six. He and Beth have two daughters and love Wyoming very much, first and foremost: First United Methodist Church of Cheyenne. Mark invites everyone to powerful, spirit-filled worship and inspired programming.
Come and join us. Hear, see and feel the Holy Spirit.
Rev. Bill Novak, Associate Pastor.
Bill comes from the small town of Chester, Montana where he grew up in a United Methodist family of four. After leaving home, he went to Whitman College in Walla Walla WA before joining the Peace Corps and moving to Paraguay for four years. In Paraguay, he met another volunteer, Abby, who, against her better judgment, decided to marry him. They lived in
Evanston IL while Bill completed a Masters of Divinity at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and continued studies for a PhD in Moral Theology (expected graduation in 2019), and Abby got her R.N. degree. During that time they had three of their four daughters: Wynne, Beatrice, and Mabel. A fourth is on the way (expected arrival June 2018)!
Bill enjoys discussing God and the meaning of life over hot coffee on Sunday mornings and cold beer on Sunday nights. Come join us!

Sunday School and Kids
108 E 18th Street. The church parking lot is on 19th street adjacent to the church.
Our Sunday School hour is from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Sept-May. We have classes for all ages Pre-school-Adult. Children meet downstairs; sign-up sheets are at the foot of the stairs and staff members are available to give direction. For adults, we have classes all over the building. Ask an usher to guide you and check the education page of this site.
During worship, we have a Children’s Center just outside the sanctuary where we provide kiddie bags of toys, coloring books, crayons, etc. for the children in the sanctuary so that children can be a part of worship in a way that engages them and the parents can feel at ease to concentrate on God’s word. Ask an usher to grab a bag.
We also have a nursery for ages infant-8 staffed by trained and certified caregivers. It is located in the back corner of the building. Ushers and greeters can help newcomers locate the nursery. Also, don’t be afraid to ask! Our members are more than ready to help.
